A logo’s story
Sciaenops ocellatus or the redfish, also known as the Red Drum, is the fish in our logo. Well, it is and it isn’t.
I wish I could say there was some cool story behind the logo. Basically, I cloud sourced it. I sat down and thought about what I was trying to do with the app, what the main goal was. I decided I wanted something that was easily identified as “marking a location” and a fish.
Now that I had an idea, I reached out to a designer who listened to my idea and then sent me several image options. Anyone can tell you that creating a good logo is extremely important. It’s your calling card, the thing people will recognize at a glance and know what it belongs to. I took my time, looking at the options over and over again. Finally I settled on the one that I thought was most unique and launched MyFinFinder with it.
Unfortunately, later I discovered that it was, in fact, not unique at all. The designer had basically used free public clip art to create it. That’s when I got in touch with Katie, who designed the current logo. I told her it would be cool if the “pin” actually looked like a hook of some sort. I also sent her several pictures of redfish and trout, to use in combination, to create a unique looking fish.
I chose these two types of fish because they are fairly recognizable and widespread, but also fish that have given me some of my most memorable and exciting fights. I knew that together they could make something that most people would only need to glance at to recognize, even if subconsciously, as well as potentially bring up great memories.
We’ve gone through a number of iterations. But we’ve finally arrived at what you know to be our logo, and I couldn’t be happier with it!
